In the session "Images from Brazil and the Companhia do Latão", I intend to present, in general terms, the Brazilian social and political context in the late 1990s and the Art Against Barbarism movement, and the approximations between Brazilian literary criticism and the plays Ópera dos Vivos (2010 - https://youtu.be/O6b1tdzYuaw) and Lugar Nenhum (2018 - https://youtu.be/hApeHEsB1ok). Companhia do Latão, recently awarded El Gallo de La Havana by Casa de las Americas (Cuba), seeks to critically think and reflect on Brazil through theoretical essays and scenic experiments that challenge the spectator through realistic performances. In the words of Sérgio de Carvalho, theatre can be a "going beyond" the spectacle in learning an "active, fair and beautiful life".
