This Catalogue, accompanying the exhibition JOSÉ MARQUES: PHOTOGRAPHER ON STAGE, aims to provide the first-in-depth look at this theatre photographer´s work, focusing on his time at the Dona Maria II National Theatre. A set of texts contextualises José Marques working relationship with this theatre, based on portraits of actors and shots of outstanding productions by the Rey Colaço-robles Monteiro Company; in addition to others after the company had disbanded. The modernity of his work, using image dramaturgy, cinematography, scene fragmentation and the photographer on stage, sets José Marques at the forefront of Portuguese theatre photography.
