A database collects documents and information in the form of texts, still or moving images. But it does more than that. The collection obeys criteria on what and how to put together what seems random, according to a purpose that is to make it possible to find, research and study data by establishing links of confluence, complementarity or contrast. In other words, a database is an archive that, in its apparent immobility, challenges us to know and produce more knowledge. On the one hand, it preserves and makes accessible what exists in libraries, archives and online repositories, and on the other it offers rigorous data processing.
The OPSIS database (http://opsis.fl.ul.pt/Home/Index) aims to gather images that relate to theatre, performing arts and manifestations of implicit theatricality. Its creation has raised many questions concerning the status of the image, referentiality and representation and the potential uses of images that show some connection with theatre.
This free course aims to introduce the OPSIS base and how to exploit it for research and creation.
