The Casa Aberta [Open House] programme, developed in partnership with CET, this time poses the question: The masterclass was run by Nuno Carinhas, director, set and costume designer who, in the last 10 years has headed the Teatro Nacional S. João, in partnership with CET researcher, José Pedro Sousa.
What to do with the classics? This is a question that gives us no respite. Many answers have been given, in writing or on the boards of stages: leave them alone; turn them around; make them seem contemporaries: travel with them to the past… But the discussion lives on. We invited Nuno Carinhas to come and show us how he approaches and what he looks for in the classics to give him, and us, pleasure. He was joined by José Pedro Sousa: a student of the classics who loves to see them staged.
“Dialogues on the relevance of classical and contemporary theatre repertoires – the reserve of language and languages in action; the means of questioning reality through perennial themes of existence; the pleasure of the physical appropriation of words; fiction as a time machine; the progression of forms; the development of imaginative speech; pertinence and responsibility for the repetition of narratives” (Nuno Carinhas).
