(Un)safe Conversations with Virgínia Kastrup & Luciana Caliman

The arts of joint attention

In this conversation we will talk about the importance of paying attention to our attention and cultivating attentional regimes that strengthen our careful correspondence with the world. It is about practicing the arts of joint attention, an invitation to think about attention beyond the individual, as a fundamental process in the constitution of relational networks that articulate humans and non-humans. An ecological approach that allows us to understand how attention works in the aesthetic experience, in artistic practices and in creation processes, including research and teaching activities. The proposal is to discuss and analyze the power of an attentive, multisensory and affectable body. In this sense, the arts of attention point to a new politics of relationality.

(Un)safe Conversations began as a series of online talks with invited artists, scholars, and free thinkers on art studies. This series was one of the Centre for Theatre Studies’ strategies to look for new forms of togetherness and collective thinking during the pandemic while maintaining a provocative stream of academic discussions. Following the relief of social restrictions, the series is now adopting a live format, preserving the appetite for the daring and imaginative side of face-to-face conversations.
