The first International Conference of the ARTHE project – Archiving the Theater, which we called ARQUIVOS CRUZADOS, will take place on the 11th and 12th of December at the Teatro Nacional S. João. It aims to bring together diverse experiences of identification, treatment of performing arts archives and consequent discussion of the circumstances of archiving as a practice of conservation and re-creation. The ongoing national mapping of company and artist archives includes a comparative approach to similar initiatives in different countries that have been developing knowledge about archives in order to reconfigure and re-memorize the transformative potential of community practices in the performing arts.
We invited Heike Roms, professor and researcher at the University of Exeter, Elisabeth Azevedo, theater historian and researcher at the University of São Paulo, Pía Gutiérrez, professor at the Faculty of Theater at PUC, in Chile and member of the ARDE collective, together with Katharina Eitner Archivos de Arte (proyectoarde.org) and Marco Baravalle, one of those responsible for the INCOMMON project. In praise of community. Shared creativity in arts and politics in Italy (1959-1979).
There will also be a selection of communications on cases of currently existing archives that help to problematize technical, historical, sociological, political, artistic and philosophical issues surrounding both archiving practices and the production and transmission of knowledge about the performing arts originated from them.
