Biografias do Teatro Português

The Biographies of Portuguese Theatre collection is aimed at a wide audience and is intended to contribute not only to the dissemination of outstanding figures in 19th and 20th century Portuguese theatre, but also to knowledge of theatre history itself.
Bearing in mind the small number of works published in this area, which in no way reflects the research that has been carried out in recent years, especially in academic circles, we will try to take advantage of the knowledge brought by these studies, since they contain new data and new perspectives, resulting from the analysis of documentation that is already available in many libraries. In the light of this new reality in theatre studies, it is possible to offer a new approach to the paths to be presented, while at the same time providing a comprehensive but also more accurate view of our theatrical past.
The choice of biographers was based on several criteria: artistic and social relevance, diversity and longevity of the personalities in question; figures who have not been the subject of a recent publication, unless they are considered unavoidable, and who allow for crossovers and connections with TNDM II’s programme.
