Autos de António Prestes

Autos de António Prestes

For more than a century, a reliable and readable edition of António Prestes’ work has been called for, given the many shortcomings of the one published by Tito de Noronha (1871), the last complete edition of the 16th century author’s texts.

This edition, part of the series dedicated to recovering 16th century Portuguese theatre, led by Doctor José Camões, aims to fill this serious cultural gap, allowing access to all seven of António Prestes’ known plays (of his Auto da Degolação de S. João Baptista, no copies have been found). They stand out in the context of the abundant Portuguese dramatic production of the 16th century, being significantly distant from the universe of the so-called ‘Vincentian school’, both from a thematic point of view and in terms of scenic mechanics, as well as for what, without breaking with the tradition of that school, announces a new sensibility and a different art, which, as Eugenio Asensio noted, ‘prefers the new to the spontaneous, ingenuity to beauty, the suggestive fragment to the harmonious and unitary construction’. In fact, in Autos de António Prestes, we are faced with a theatre of the daily life of an unburdened bourgeoisie, focused on the home and the family, which celebrates marriage and conjugal love, in a world of senior officials from judicial bodies, in which the servants acquire the status of protagonist subjects, more because of their social status than because of their dramaturgical function, which is relatively ancillary.
