With this volume of the Works (autos and poems) of Afonso Álvares, we begin a series dedicated to 16th century Portuguese theatre, an area that has long lacked an adequate editorial treatment that would allow access to this almost unknown expression of Portuguese culture, due to the lack of modern editions of the work of our main dramatic authors of that period. The theatre of Afonso Álvares that is collected here is a didactic theatre that exemplifies the power of prayer, devoted to the Holy Trinity, alternating the comic with the serious, sometimes made to order, and intended to raise the spirits of spectators and post readers.
