On 18/04, at 4:00 p.m., the showcase Memórias do Cárcere takes place at Teatro Aberto in Lisbon. The showcase is the result of Tiago Silva’s doctoral research, in which he developed a programme of dramaturgical research and creation with students from the University of Lisbon, based on Portuguese prison narratives, focusing on stories of individuals incarcerated during the Estado Novo regime under Salazar and Marcelo Caetano (1933–1974).
The students’ performances bring together scenic fragments that engage with memory, repression, and resistance. The audience is invited to explore different perspectives on imprisonment and its human and social impacts. The project offers a critical reflection on Portugal’s recent past and its reverberations in the present.
The activity is part of the Brazilian researcher’s PhD at the Centre for Theatre Studies at FLUL (Faculty of Arts and Humanities, University of Lisbon), within the course “Contemporary Dramaturgies,” taught by Rui Pina Coelho, in the undergraduate programme in Artistic Studies – Performing Arts variant (FLUL).
