Ponto Magazine Issues 3 and 4

In 2025, the journal became semiannual.

In issue no. 3, this issue highlights echoes of Gil Vicente in a Danza de un pastor y gitanas in seventeenth-century New Granada, the complex stage design of the Mágicas in the eighteenth century, the career of Josefa Soares, an actress in Lisbon theatres at the turn of the eighteenth to the nineteenth century, and the work of Pedro Alexandre Cavroé, an author from the early decades of the nineteenth century, as well as aspects of the controversy that, in the mid-nineteenth century, arose around the concept of historical drama. From the twentieth century, it presents António Pedro’s theory of theatre, the functioning of censorship of foreign theatre, and an analysis of the three dramatic works by Augusto Abelaira.

In issue no. 4, the History of Theatre in Portugal is revisited through the documentary analysis of eighteenth-century novels about the Pátio das Arcas. The eighteenth-century entremés representation of adultery is examined, and an unpublished Portuguese translation of Schiller’s Wilhelm Tell from the mid-nineteenth century is presented. From the twentieth century, the Trilogy of Giants, one of Fernando Pessoa’s various dramatic projects, is discussed; the response of censorship to the staging of plays by Tennessee Williams is revisited; and the appearances of the director and actress Henriette Morineau, a French artist based in Brazil, on Portuguese stages between 1963 and 1970 are commented on. Finally, the project Arthe – Archiving Theatre is introduced, both as it was and as it is today, having assessed the condition of the archives of theatre companies founded in Portugal during the 1970s and 1980s.
