This volume of studies deepens the knowledge of Spanish dramaturgy of the 16th century based on the contributions of 11 specialists who focus on aspects not yet perceived or little analyzed in the productions, authors and scenic practices of the theater at the time.
These aspects address issues such as the rhetoric of representation, an analysis of the figures of the powerful, the father or the student, the presence of Torres Naharro in Teatro Cervantino or Juan de la Cueva in the literary historiography of Illustration, and linguistic variation in Lope de Rueda, in addition to the study of productions by playwrights such as Mexía de la Cerda or Gómez de Eslava and the analysis of an illuminated decade of 16th-century theater. We are facing original contributions that shed light on a theater that is beginning to be known, but which still leave countless gaps to be covered.
The book El Teatro en el siglo XVI. Authors and scenic practices, directed by doctors Miguel Ángel Teijeiro Fuentes and José Roso Díaz, is in turn the result of a broader project, in which these professors count on the collaboration of other academic experts in the area and with the help of several institutions, among them the Major of Torres de Miguel Sesmero (hometown of Bartolomé de Torres Navarro) and the University of Extremadura, want to give value and at the same time spread the first Spanish classical theater. This is a living project that is growing with the publication of several studies and the organization of several scientific and cultural activities, including the annual celebration of an international congress, located in the Torre de Miguel Sesmero.
