Por s'entender bem a letra Homenagem a Stephen Reckert

Stephen Reckert’s life and work are a paradigm of doing things well and, at the same time, of living a thoughtful, expansive and totalising life. Of the various fields of research to which he dedicated himself, special mention should be made of the popular type of lyric, which he called lyra minima, a designation that came to be accepted internationally, and the interpretation of the spirit and lyrics of Gil Vicente’s theatre, alluded to in the verse of Romagem dos Agravados that is the title of this book. His erudition in the field of literary studies is perfectly paralleled by his academic teaching, which he carried out in the conviction that teaching is not reduced to explaining ‘the lines that young men rhymed to flatter beautys ignorant ear’ (Yeats). Testimony to this attitude are the collaborations of some of his former students in this tribute. The eclecticism of this collection, also evident in the linguistic diversity of the texts by scholars from all over the world, reflects the multiple interests that shape Stephen Reckert’s erudition and the richness of his academic and human journey.
