Sinais de Cena – Journal of Theatre and Performance Studies publishes original texts dedicated to research in Theatre Studies and Performance Studies.
It is an annual journal specializing in theatre and performance studies, published by the Centre for Theatre Studies of the School of Arts and Humanities, University of Lisbon, in collaboration with the Portuguese Association of Theatre Critics (APCT).
The journal Sinais de Cena was founded in 2004 by Carlos Porto, Luiz Francisco Rebello, Paulo Eduardo Carvalho, and Maria Helena Serôdio, who directed it until 2014. During these ten years it maintained a biannual publication schedule (June and December). Up to issue 10 (December 2008), it was published by Campo das Letras. Issues 11 (June 2009) to 22 (December 2014) were published by Húmus, with Maria Helena Serôdio continuing as Director.
Series II began in June 2016 under the imprint of Orfeu Negro, with Rui Pina Coelho as Director. In 2022, Series III was launched; the journal adopted a digital-only format and began operating on the OJS (Open Journal Systems) platform, under the direction of Marta Brites Rosa.
