The establishment of democracy in Portugal and Spain, following the Revolution of 25 April 1974 and the ‘Transition’ after the death of dictator Francisco Franco in 1975, brought about very diverse and profound political, social and cultural changes in both Iberian countries. Literature could not remain (and did not remain) oblivious to these transformations, after long decades of censorship under authoritarian regimes. Fifty years on, it is important to reflect critically on what these processes of revolution and transition meant in both countries, and specifically in their literatures, promoting a comparative Iberian perspective, in which the artistic and cultural dialogues of the peninsular polysystem during this period become more visible. Thus, at this meeting, we invite a renewed analysis of the literary production that emerged during these processes of implementing Iberian democracies, as well as its relationship with other artistic, social and cultural manifestations. At the same time, we propose the study of Iberian literature which, over the last 50 years, and very significantly already in the 21st century, has sought to represent this historical period, (de)mythifying or (de)constructing certain ideas and perceptions, in variable articulation with political or historiographical discourses.
