Marivaux put to the test on the contemporary stage: What kind of acting for Marivaux's theatre?

This international colloquium on Marivaux, part of the international project directed by Paola Ranzini SEM (Scènes Européennes et extra-européennes Marivaux) as part of an IUF (Institut Universitaire de France) research programme, is being held in Lisbon under the auspices of the Centre for Theatre Studies at the University of Lisbon, Escola ACT de Lisboa, Teatro dos Aloés, in partnership with the Centre for Research in Arts and Communication (CIAC) at the University of the Algarve and ENSATT (Natioanl School of Arts and Technics of Theatre) in Lyon, with the support of the Association Portugaise d'Études Françaises (APEF) and the Institut Français du Portugal.

With the aim of revisiting Marivaux's conception of the actor's game and studying the contours of this legacy in the updating of his scenic work and in the training of actors in various countries, namely France and Portugal, three axes of analysis have been proposed for the presentation of papers: 1) Acting in Marivaux's time; 2) Marivaudian acting since the 18th century; 3) Marivaux and the training of the actor.

The programme includes a session on the afternoon of June 30, at Recreios da Amadora, with readings of the play La fausse suivante, in French and Portuguese, respectively, by students from the ENSATT, ACT and Teatro dos Aloés theatre schools. This will be followed by a debate open to the public with the participation of directors Galin Stoëv, Michel Cerda, José Peixoto and Sofia de Portugal, moderated by Ana Clara Santos (UAlg) and Maria João Brilhante (CET-FLUL). The aim is to provide an enriching exchange of experiences on the challenges posed by Marivaux's writing to the training of actors.

On 1 July, the colloquium will continue at FLUL with the presentation of a diverse set of papers on each of the proposed axes.

The Colloquium will be part of the Actor's Workshop promoted by Teatro dos Aloés at Recreios da Amadora, which will be led by Sofia de Portugal and José Peixoto and will focus on the exploration of Marivaux's ‘Love, Truth and Lies’ (La fausse suivante, translated by Maria João Brilhante).
