The mission of the Centre for Theatre Studies is to promote rigorous and innovative research in theatre and performance studies while contributing to the development of new generations of researchers in the field.
Since its creation, CET has focused particularly on the historical and sociological study of theatre, together with the collection, preservation and analysis of documentary materials that support research on theatre produced and presented in Portugal. A central aspect of this work has been the development of digital research infrastructures that facilitate broad and open access to sources relevant to the study of theatre history.
Research at CET is currently organised around three main research lines that foster dialogue between individual and collaborative projects:
Discursive Practices in the Performing Arts, History of Theatre and Performance, and Theatre and Image.
The training of early-career researchers is also a core component of the Centre’s mission. In addition to contributing to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching at the University of Lisbon, CET develops collaborations with other higher education institutions and with public and private organisations involved in the production and circulation of knowledge. The Centre regularly hosts research internships and research placements, supporting the training of students, scholars and professionals in the performing arts.
